Are Americans Really Unwelcome in Europe Right Now?

Warm Italian Welcome

The headlines make it sound settled: Americans aren't welcome in Europe anymore. Clips of Barcelona protesters aiming water guns at tourists, and "Tourists Go Home" banners across Southern Europe, have circulated widely enough that some travelers are rethinking a trip they'd already been planning.

Coverage often frames that anger as personal: a rejection of foreign visitors, and especially Americans, sometimes tied to friction over U.S. domestic politics. That framing makes for a compelling headline. It doesn't match what's actually happening on the ground, which is a different, and much less personal, story.

Over the next few weeks, I want to walk through what's actually driving the pushback, what it means for a trip you're planning, and how to travel through it without any of the friction the headlines describe.
